How USB Ports Work

Inside a USB cable: There are two wires for power -- +5 volts (red) and ground (brown) -- and a twisted pair (yellow and blue) of wires to carry the data. The cable is also shielded.

USB Features
The Universal Serial Bus has the following features:
  • The computer acts as the host.
  • Up to 127 devices can connect to the host, either directly or by way of USB hubs.
  • Individual USB cables can run as long as 5 meters; with hubs, devices can be up to 30 meters (six cables' worth) away from the host.
  • With USB 2.0,the bus has a maximum data rate of 480 megabits per second (10 times the speed of USB 1.0).
  • A USB 2.0 cable has two wires for power (+5 volts and ground) and a twisted pair of wires to carry the data. The USB 3.0 standard adds four more wires for data transmission. While USB 2.0 can only send data in one direction at a time (downstream or upstream), USB 3.0 can transmit data in both directions simultaneously.
  • On the power wires, the computer can supply up to 500 milliamps of power at 5 volts. A USB 3.0 cable can supply up to 900 milliamps of power.
  • Low-power devices (such as mice) can draw their power directly from the bus. High-power devices (such as printers) have their own power supplies and draw minimal power from the bus. Hubs can have their own power supplies to provide power to devices connected to the hub.
  • USB devices are hot-swappable, meaning you can plug them into the bus and unplug them any time. A USB 3.0 cable is compatible with USB 2.0 ports -- you won't get the same data transfer speed as with a USB 3.0 port but data and power will still transfer through the cable.
  • Many USB devices can be put to sleep by the host computer when the computer enters a power-saving mode.
The devices connected to a USB port rely on the cable to carry power and data.

How does a fiber optic cable work?

Over the last 20 years or so, fiber optic lines have taken over and transformed the long distance telephoneindustry. Optical fibers are also a huge part of making the Internetavailable around the world. When fiber replaces copper for long distance calls and Internet traffic, it dramatically lowers costs.
Tounderstand how a fiber optic cable works, imagine an immensely longdrinking straw or flexible plastic pipe. For example, imagine a pipethat is several miles long. Now imagine that the inside surface of thepipe has been coated with a perfect mirror. Now imagine that you arelooking into one end of the pipe. Several miles away at the other end,a friend turns on a flashlight and shines it into the pipe. Because theinterior of the pipe is a perfect mirror, the flashlight's light willreflect off the sides of the pipe (even though the pipe may curve andtwist) and you will see it at the other end. If your friend were toturn the flashlight on and off in a morse code fashion, your friendcould communicate with you through the pipe. That is the essence of afiber optic cable.
Making a cable out of a mirrored tube wouldwork, but it would be bulky and it would also be hard to coat theinterior of the tube with a perfect mirror. A real fiber optic cable istherefore made out of glass. The glass is incredibly pure so that, eventhough it is several miles long, light can still make it through(imagine glass so transparent that a window several miles thick stilllooks clear). The glass is drawn into a very thin strand, with athickness comparable to that of a human hair. The glass strand is thencoated in two layers of plastic.
By coating the glass in plastic, you get the equivalent of a mirror around the glass strand. This mirror creates total internal reflection, just like a perfect mirror coating on the inside of a tube does. Youcan experience this sort of reflection with a flashlight and a windowin a dark room. If you direct the flashlight through the window at a 90degree angle, it passes straight through the glass. However, if youshine the flashlight at a very shallow angle (nearly parallel to theglass), the glass will act as a mirror and you will see the beamreflect off the window and hit the wall inside the room. Lighttraveling through the fiber bounces at shallow angles like this andstays completely within the fiber.

Strange Facts About The Universe

Strange Facts About The Universe

It’s fair to say that the universe is a pretty big place, so big that we will probably never fully understand how it works.  That said, research conducted over the past few decades has brought us a far greater understanding of the complexity that is ‘everything’ than ever before and thrown up plenty of strange facts along the way.

1. There’s Probably Someone Else Out There

Aliens are sci-fi bread and butter, whether they’re coming to pay us a not-so-friendly visit or we’ve developed interstellar travel and have gone to check out their place.  There are at least 100 billion galaxies in the universe, and 300 billion stars in our galaxy alone, making there a whopping 30,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars out there, each probably having a planet or ten surrounding it.  If you consider just how big the universe is, probability leans heavily toward the idea that there’s other intelligent life out there somewhere.  The problem is…

2. We’ll Probably Never Meet Each Other

Let’s assume there is intelligent life on the nearest known planet outside our solar system that might actually be able to support it, Tau Ceti f.  First of all, one or other of the people of the two planets would have to develop technology sufficiently close to light speed to make travelling between them possible – for perspective, consider that the Sun and Tau Ceti are 11.9 light years apart. Next, the two would have to exist within the same window of time to come into contact with one another, not necessarily a guarantee if you think about what alien visitors would have encountered on Earth just 10,000 years ago.  Of course, if distance weren’t an issue, there’d be a much greater chance of running into ET, but that would require a complete reworking of our understanding of the laws of physics.

3. Shooting Stars Are Actually A Thing

Of course, everyone knows that what we call a shooting star is actually a meteorite burning up as it hits our atmosphere, but there are such things as ‘hypervelocity stars’.  The first of these was discovered in 2005, travelling ten times faster than ordinary stars at a huge 530 miles per second and heading straight out of its galaxy.  The cause of these super-fast flying balls of gas is unknown, with supernovae or other high-energy phenomena one possible cause.

4. There Is A Giant Booze Cloud In Space

In 2006, the MERLIN radio telescope detected a huge cloud in space consisting of gaseous methyl alcohol.  What’s even more remarkable is that this cloud spans roughly 288 billion miles – over three times the distance between Earth and the Sun.  Those looking to make a truly astronomical cocktail shouldn’t get too excited however – methanol isn’t suitable for human consumption.  It’s also 10,000 light years away!

5. A Star Is Born. And Then Another.

All the matter flying around the universe is inevitably drawn together, meaning that new stars are being created in galaxies throughout the universe.  In our own galaxy, approximately two new stars are created each year – in extremely active galaxies like recently-discovered HFLS3, the rate is as high as 2000 per year.

6. Earth Days Are Getting Longer

The rotation of the Earth is affected by a range of factors, including the gravitational effect of the moon and even events on Earth such as major earthquakes and tsunamis.  The precise length of a day actually fluctuates on a daily basis, but on average has been getting progressively longer at a rate of just milliseconds per year – when the dinosaurs still walked the Earth, a day was just 22 hours long.

7. You Can See The Big Bang On Your TV

While digital TV might have meant an end to the classic black and white static of days gone by, if you can get to a set with an analogue setting, you can get a glimpse of the beginning of the universe.  1% of the static on the screen is a result of cosmic microwave background radiation, a remnant of the Big Bang which took place 13.7 billion years ago.

8. Everything Is Stardust

It might sound like the name of a hippy LP from the 70s, but there’s a lot of truth in this old saying.  Every naturally-occurring element, with the exception of hydrogen and helium, is created within stars, meaning that (for example) the iron in your blood is actually billions of years old and has come from stars trillions of miles away.

9. Most Of It Is A Mystery

Of course, it goes without saying that there is a vast amount that we don’t know about the universe, but the point here is that we are totally clueless as to what fundamentally makes up 96% of the universe.  We know that stars, planets, asteroids and similar objects make up 0.4%, and huge gas clouds fill 3.6%, but the remainder is so-called ‘dark matter’ and ‘dark energy’, of which we still know absolutely nothing about other than the fact that it must be there.

10. There’s A Very, Very Big Diamond Out There

Discovered in 2004, a collapsed star just 50 light years away from Earth was discovered, measuring 4000km across and with a pure diamond core of 10 billion trillion trillion carats.  If the interstellar mining industries of so many sci-fi movies ever became reality, I imagine there’d be a fair few fights over the rights to this rock!

THE SCIENCE BEHIND TEMPLE BELLS

The moment you ring that bell, bell produces sharp butlastingsound which lasts for minimum of seven seconds in echo modegood enough totouch your seven healing centres or chakras in yourbody. The moment bell sound happens your brain is emptied of allthoughts. Invariably you will enter state of Tran’s state where youare very receptive. This Trans state is the one with awareness. Youare so occupied in mind that only way to awaken you is with a Shock!Bell works as Anti-dote to your mind. Before you enter temple – toawake you and prepare you for taste of awareness is the real reasonbehind temple bell.

A New York-based company has created a smart pill bottle that comes with a built-in technology, which alerts you to take your medicines on time.

adheretech_bottle_640_large_verge_medium_landscape.png
Josh Stein, CEO and co-founder of AdhereTech, the company behind the bottle, said every time the patient opens the bottle, the bottle sends two pieces of data to our servers. Number one: The timestamp of the opening and the closing of the cap, and second time, a measurement of the amount of medication remaining in the bottle, CBS reported.

The bottle flashes blue when the user is supposed to take his medication, and if they miss their dose it flashes red and beeps.

The patient also gets alerted with an automated phone call or text message.

7 home remedies to curb cold and cough

With the change in weather, viral cough and cold are common ailments that kids suffer from. Try some of these remedies to treat the ailment and boost your kid's immunity:

1. Steam: If your little one suffers from cold and has trouble breathing, get him/her to take steam. Make the kid stand in the bathroom withhot water running or simply heat water in a wide bowl and make the kid inhale the hot fumes for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Adding eucalyptus oil can also help soothe your child's system.

2. Honey: Known for its soothing effect, dip your finger in honey and let your baby lick it two three times in a day. If your child is older than five years, mix a spoonful with cinnamon powder and ask him/her to have it.

3. Carom Seeds: Boiling water along with carom seeds (ajwain) and tulsi leaves can help to keep the cough in check. It also helps in relieving chest congestion.

4. Massage: Massages work best for children who are below two years of age. Mix mustard oil with garlic and massage your baby's chest, back and neck area. Also cover the baby's palm and feet with the oil for a quick relief.

5. Keep your kid hydrated: When your kid is going through a bout of sneezing and coughing, it is very important to keep him/her hydrated. Drinking water at regular intervals will help fight the common cold and reduce the inflammation in the throat along with washing out the infection. Other fluids in form of warm soup or a fresh juice are also beneficial for replenishing the body's lost energy.

6. Salt gargling: A glass of hot water with a teaspoon of salt can be useful to ease a sore throat. Ask your kid to gargle with salt water twice a day. The saline water helps soothe the pain.

7. Turmeric milk: Due to its antiseptic properties, turmeric is known to treat viral infections such as cough and cold. Add turmeric powder to a glass of warm milk and make your kid have it every night. It provides instant relief for an aching throat and runny nose. Since it is a rich source of calcium, milk also provides energy to your kid.
